Broadening horizons, My Kilpatrick Experience by Claudio Bardone

Moving to a foreign country? Check. Learning a third language? Check. These are some of the obstacles our consultant Claudio Bardone has overcome. Originally from Mexico he moved to Milan with no set plan but up to the challenge of growing his career in Milan. He started out as an intern and grew to consultant over the past 10 months. Get to know his story and how he has taken advantage of a cross border business to better understand the executive search industry.

How did you arrive in Kilpatrick and how long have you been working here?

After finishing my degree in Mexico City, I moved to Italy seeking adventure without a job, without a house, without anything. So, I just got there and I started to look for a job. Fortunately, through personal acquaintances and references, I learned about Kilpatrick LATAM. Marco, the Director of Americas put me in contact with the Milan team. Soon after, I was interviewed, and fortunately they had a job opening. I was hired as an intern and in the last 10 months I have been promoted to my current role as a full time consultant.

How has your experience been different working in Italy, being originally from Mexico?

I was born and raised in Mexico City, where Kilpatrick currently has the LATAM office in. This has allowed me to understand the company, business wise, in a well rounded way. I have adapted work ethics from Mexico and have adjusted to the way Italy does business as well. Living in Italy but having the possibility of visiting home often has allowed me to stay close to my roots without sacrificing the benefits of working abroad.

How did working in Kilpatrick extend your view in cross border business?

I believe that Kilpatrick has used the post pandemic way of doing business in the most efficient way possible. We have digitized our processes and have used technology as our main ally. I have been able to work on projects with clients and colleagues all over the world, applying and strengthening my three languages to connect with people anywhere.

You feel as if you are right there with them and working together no matter where you are in the world has been simplified. I have learned that borders are no excuse to not broaden your horizons on looking for candidates or opportunities.

What do you like the most about working in Italy?

I enjoy the culture and I like being able to live abroad. Before I moved here (Milan) I was familiar but not fluent in Italian. Now I have been able to practice and be fluent in a third language, which is definitely beneficial on a personal and business level.

The lifestyle, food and people are just wonderful. The independence and personal growth that comes with moving so far away from home is something I believe everyone should do if they have the chance.

How did you deal with the cultural differences of working in Italy?

Mexico and Italy are more similar than one may think. Because of this some aspects of Italian culture felt just like home. For example we have the same sense of humor, we know how to laugh and have a good time, we are social and prioritize enjoying life.

On the other hand, some of the differences are mostly in terms of working styles. In Mexico we are known for doing business in a very social and easy going way whereas in Milan working culture is based on discipline, punctuality, and an eye for detail.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your colleagues?

Being straightforward, the importance of learning from your mistakes,  working hard and speaking up when you have any questions. Being communicative with your team as well as clients to get a better understanding of what they are looking for.
